Back at Home

It's been about 2 weeks since I've been back home in California. I completely died after my trip; I was deathly sick from an infection, about to get a cold, and exhausted from traveling around multiple countries in various climates in a short period of time. Thankfully my parents have been taking good care of me and while I'm not fully recovered yet, I'm getting a lot of rest and sleep.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to relax as much as I hoped since I have a standardized exam which I'm required to take for work and have been fretting about.. (long story, will explain in another post hopefully!) so once that's out of the way tomorrow I'll have more time to edit pictures and do some writing about my trip. In the mean time I'm really enjoying myself being back home.. because how much better can it be when your hometown is San Francisco?

What's For Lunch?

Many people ask me what I eat when I'm out and about. As a poor expat, I don't have money or the time to dine in even local restaurants. 80% of my meals are eaten or bought at the Old Market. When I don't have time, I do take outs. It's really like Panda Express, really. You just choose the dishes that you want and they pack it all up for you. Each dish is 2,000 riel ($0.50), additional 1,000 riel ($0.25) for a box of rice. It's filling, freshly made, quick, and authentic.

Rain, Water, and Moon

As I've wrote before..rain here is no joke.. It's a both a blessing as well as a total disaster.

Time to walk in the rain ahem ahem I mean sewer water...

So as you can imagine it's a great relief when the Monsoon ends. First there's the Kathina Festival  followed by the Water Festival.

Traditionally, there are boat races (similar to the dragon boat races in China) and carnivals along the Tonle Sap Lake or rivers throughout the country. But ever since the disaster accident in 2010 in Phnom Penh the country has been in mourning and no "official" celebrations have been held since.

Although, what is interesting is that there is a lot of controversy surrounding over the accident. Many activist organizations and even monks are acerbic towards and brutally excoriate the government over this issue; putatively there may have been some conspiracy act committed and that certain details of the accident were shrouded away. Cambodia's mendacious and fraudulent government (and shockingly overwhelming ex-Khmer Rouge politicians holding office including the President) has been a sore spot for the Cambodian people as well as been an big reason for the hindrance of economical growth. Many of the monks who are on Facebook use pseudonyms for the sole reason of expressing their criticism towards the government. I digressed but in any case, the Water Festival holds a dark meaning for the people here in many ways.

Nevertheless, other traditions are still intact. On the full moon (on Friday), many homes had am-bok parties in which family and friends take their wooden pestles to gather to mash sticky rice in a stone mortar to make sticky rice cake. It is then mixed with coconut and bananas and then offered to the moon with prayers. This tradition has a striking resemblance with the Moon Festival in Japan - I am not sure of the historical origins of the two but it always makes me happy each time I find similarities between the two cultures.

At Dusk

Despite the fact that the dust and the gas emission will probably kill my lungs, for the vibrance and energy that I feel from the rush hour here is quite something. There's something oddly soothing watching women driving one handed with big bags of groceries in the other and small children clinging on their parents or other siblings for dear life on the back of a motorcycle. It's certainly much better than the overly congested trains in Tokyo full of of inebriated, crass, tepid people squished in together like a can of sardines.

Running at Sunrise

After 3 weeks of staying indoors most of the time to avoid the rains that have been inundating the city, my body clearly had a paucity of exercise. I started going to yoga class twice a week but something was still missing in my life.

Ah, running

Even since I ended my career as a high school varsity track & field and cross country runner, I have repeatedly told myself I was done away with running. But as all you runners know, it's kind of a bug that sticks around for you for the rest of your life. Whenever I don't run for a few weeks my body starts to yearn for it.

But I have been a bit ambivalent running in Siem Reap. I always get a bit squirmish running on roads I'm not very familiar with. Plus I was unsure whether or not the environment here would be runner friendly. But recently my scintillating coworker, who just started training for the Angkor Wat half marathon in December, has been saying that the roads were totally innocuous and she was really enjoying her runs.  So after getting proselytized for a few days, I was finally galvanized enough this morning to jump out my bed before sunrise and go on a quick run.

And now I'm in love with it.

I don't know why I was fretting so much before. Nothing can be so soothing and beautiful than running along the riverside while watching the sun slowly rise (especially since I avoided rush hour raft of motorcycles swarming around everywhere).

I suppose Asian women runners are a bit of a novelty out here so most of the people I pass on the streets have either looked at me in aghast or smiled at me. It's quite entertaining. Well, soon it will no longer be a novelty because you are going to see me quite often from now on!

My body feels a bit enervated since my body has not yet acclimatized to running in this heat but otherwise I feel fantastic.

I suppose signing up and training for that half marathon myself isn't such a bad idea after all?

The Savior Jug

I get dehydrated quite easily here since it's so hot and humid. But the tap water is generally not safe to drink (although I've been getting less and less sick from it so I've been adjusting) and it's a hasstle trying to look for markets and stands to get water everyday.

My coworker who drinks about 5 liters of water a day had the same problem and came up with a miracle solution. She has installed a 20 liter jug in her guesthouse. Each jug has an installment charge of $5 but you can get it refilled each time for $1. And the best part is, the installment charge is refunded when you return the jug.

They had the same jugs at the lobby of my guesthouse as well so I requested if I can have my own one in my room. And hallelujah, they brought it up today. They even paid for my installation fee so I just need to pay $1 to the front desk every time I want it refilled. No more running to the store for more water throughout the day - I can just fill up my huge water bottle every morning to take to work. It's also good to note that it's great to use to wash your vegetables or to wash your face if you are sensitive to the water here (the water pipes are often oxidized so the showers may have a rusty smell to it).

It's an absolutely brilliant business, especially in the country-side where there is no source of reliable clean drinking water. I've lived in Tokyo and San Francisco where their city water systems are usually ranked as being the cleanest and most highly developed in the world so I've always taken tap water for granted. But being here certainly reminds me how precious and hard it is to come by clean safe water.

For anyone moving to Cambodia, this is a great investment! They are sold in every mom-and-pop shop.
