Potluck

For a city that has one of the highest rent and property prices in the world, I'm very lucky to say that I live in the university dormitories. I have my own room with my own bathroom as well in a modern building which I'm so thankful of. I also have 5 other roommates but as it always happens, we rarely sit down together as we all have differnt and busy student lives. Among us are PhD students, nurses, statisticians. So it was a very nice teamwork of us that we finally got together to celebrate our holidays.

We're 3 Swiss (all from different places), 1 Greek, 1 Mexican, 1 American/Japanese so we had quite a variety of food.

I think my norimaki came out pretty nice don't you think?

After many many weeks of going to various HQs and UN agencies... it's time to rank the various corporate lunches I've had. Just a note: most offices and organizations have their own cafeterias and serve quite nice food. It's expensive for a poor student (10-15 CHF, which is probably nothing if you're earning money) but does give me a good overview of where I want to be eating my lunches everyday in the future... ;)

UN Palais des Nations

Red Cross HQ

Palais des Nations - Salad
Special "French dish"on Bastille Day at the UN
So all in all.... my rankings are the following (totally according to my taste and bias of course!)
1. ICRC (Red Cross)
2. UN Palais des Nations
3. WMO
4. ILO

Caves Ouvertes

One of the secrets of Switzerland is that it produces a lot of wine, and it's good (although R doesn't approve of this....let's leave the battle up to the picky Frenchies). Every May all the wineries open up and offer free wine. It's a great event for wine lovers and all! Plus they sell wine bottles, Swiss food, and entertainment. It was the midst of finals studying season but that doesn't stop us from going out and having fun. If you happen to come to Switzerland around that time, I highly advise you check the events schedule as different cities and communes all have different dates for Caves Ouvertes. It's a great way to enjoy Swiss wine and culture at the same time. Plus, the vineyards are beautiful

Also Swiss wine is a great souvenir - only 1% of its wine production is exported and the rest is all consume by the Swiss. Yes we are big drinkers for sure. But also don't forget that white wine is used for making fondue so naturally we need all the wine we can!

The drunk train aka the special trains that take you to the wineries in Geneva

Unsurprisingly most of them are expats who want to get free wine and get drunk

Traditional Swiss music

Round 1

Raclette, yum!

You have to buy a glass yourself (5 CHF) and you can go around to all the wineries with it for the free wine. Very eco-friendly!

Round 2

Pleasantly tipsy

Marché de Noël à Montreux

One of the things I wanted to do while on vacation was to buy an annual demi-tarriff card. The card costs 175CHF so it's pricey but you get half off of all trains within Switzerland, plus you get discount for local trams and buses as well. Since I was thinking about traveling in spring and summer times, I got it a bit early so I can use it during my break.

The best part of this ticket is that the half price applies to all the special discount tickets. I wanted to go to one of the Christmas markets held nationwide which had a special deal. I decided to go to the Montreux Christmas market since it's only about an hour away from Geneva and the size of the market isn't too daunting. A normal roundtrip ticket costs 60CHF which I was able to get it for 25CHF which is over half off.

Montreux is the first city I came to in Switzerland when my dear friend Nancy was going to business school there. I remember we did go to the Christmas market during that time too and had some good memories. Never would I imagined I would return 7 years later!

The basic rule of thumb for Christmas market is that the more German it is, the more decadent and large-scale. Being in the French part the Montreux market may be a disappointment for some. But if you just want to experience the holiday season in Europe and get some nice food to munch on, this market isn't too bad. It is not horribly crowded and the ambiance is very nice.

Babushikas for presents..why not?

waffles and crepes

rows of candy shops..looks yummy

beautiful candle holders

book blings

fois gras!

A big pot of tartiflettes!

mmm yummy sweets and pasteries

This boy is swaggin'

Did I mention the market is right by the lake which has an amazing sunset view?

Btw the statue is of Freddie Mercury from Queen in collaboration with Santa! :)

Of course, I couldn't afford much but I bought a few foods at the stands, presents for friends, and also an apron. It was just the one I've been looking for for years so it was a nice buy.

Instant chocolate

You just dunk the whole thing in hot water (or milk) and stir until it melts. 100% natural and looks yummy!

Ever since I left the US, I stopped really celebrating Christmas - the last 6 Christmas I was working since it's not a public holiday in Tokyo. But even at work, I still had people around me I can celebrate with. This year it was winter break  I was stuck all alone for Christmas Eve this year. The Christmas market was a good way to be around people and a good holiday season atmosphere. And don't worry, even though I was walking around alone I didn't feel too lonely since I was texting with R and friends most of the time. Thank goodness to modern technology!

Melted cheese over potatotes...what can possibly go wrong with that? R

In any case regardless of my circumstances holiday season brings back nice and fuzzy childhood memories and of course lots of good food all around!
