Japanese Buddhistm and Madame Butterfly ジャポニズムと仏教

It's only been recently that I've started going to museums around Geneva. I guess around this time last year I was too busy adjusting that I didn't have the luxury to do much "cultural activities". This one at Musée de Ethnographie de Genève was particularly interesting as it was about 19th century Japanese Buddhism, Madame Butterfly and its influences it had in Europe. Thinking about it, I never saw Japan from the European prospective which I found quite interesting. Whereas in the US, we were looked upon as a second class odd culture (not all but mostly), there seems to have been a lot of exoticism and luxury built around the culture. The Europeans obsession with Buddhism was also quite interesting considering that in the US any non-Christian religion was taken as heretic. 

I was not allowed to take lots of pictures in the exhibit but if you're around Geneva, it's a really interesting exhibit whether you're familiar with Japanese culture and art or not. It's until mid-January 2016, I believe

ジュネーブに来て一年、やっと美術館や展示イベントに行くようになりました。思えば一年前の今頃は生活に慣れるのに精一杯でその余裕がなかったのよね　汗。今回行ってきたのは Musée de Ethnographie de Genèveの「マダムバタフライの仏教・仏教ジャポニズム」というやや不思議な名前の特別展示会。19世紀に日本文化と日本仏教がヨーロッパにどういう影響を与えたのか、というのがテーマ。マダムバタフライがオペラ化され人気が出たのもちょうどこの頃。

アメリカだと19世紀の日本文化は下等文化とされてきたし、 キリスト教以外の宗教は悪魔とされていたのでヨーロッパでは日本はどういう存在だったのか興味深々でした。行ってびっくりしたのは日本文化はエキゾチックで貴族社会の中では高い地位にあったということ。多くの人が日本の仏教に対して敬意を持っていたということも驚きでした。

展示作品は写真撮影不可だったのでほとんど写真が撮れなかったのは残念。もしジュネーブに来る機会があれば来年1月半ばまで展示されているのでぜひ！
